Mikhail Georgijewitsch Saladze ( Russian Михаил Георгиевич Саладзе ; born January 4, 1954 in Georgia ) is a Soviet wrestler of Georgian origin. He became world heavyweight champion in Greco-Roman style in 1981

Career

Mikhail Saladze began wrestling as a teenager in Georgia. He concentrated on the Greco-Roman style. He became a member of the Dynamo Tbilisi sports club and mainly coached by WS Maissuradze.

At the age of 19 he was the Soviet heavyweight runner-up behind Nikolai Balboschin in 1973 . In the same year he was also junior world champion in the age group "Juniors" in the same weight class in Miami. He also won the 1973 Universiade in Moscow, ahead of the Bulgarian Ivan Zolow and the American Ken Levels.

In 1974 he also won the title at the European Junior Championships (age group Espoirs) in Haparanda, Sweden. In 1974, 1975 and 1976 he took very good places in some strong international tournaments and won the heavyweight tournament in Klippan in front of the strong Bulgarian Kamen Goranow Lozanow . However, he did not go to international championships because Nikolai Balboschin dominated his weight class in the Soviet Union and in the world.

In 1976, in the absence of Nikolai Balboschin, he became the first Soviet heavyweight champion. He won this title in 1979, 1981 and 1982. In 1979 and 1983 he also won the so-called "Spartakiade", a competition that had the highest priority in the Soviet Union.

In 1981 it was used for the first time at a world championship that took place in Oslo. He won the title there with victories over Greg Gibson , USA, Josef Tertelj , Yugoslavia, Yoshihiro Fujita, Japan, Rene Vidal, France and Tamás Gáspár , Hungary. He did not get any further appearances at the international championships. In late 1983 he ended his career as a wrestler.
