The Cathedral of Santa Marta ( Spanish Catedral de Santa Marta ) is a Roman Catholic church in Santa Marta , capital of the Colombian province of Magdalena . The cathedral of the diocese of Santa Marta is dedicated to Martha of Bethany , it bears the title of a minor basilica and is a protected national treasure.

history

The cathedral was built in the 1760s on the initiative of Bishop Nicolás Gil Martínez Malo and Governor Andrés Pérez. It was built according to the plans of the architect Antonio Cachete by the engineer Juan Cayetano Chacón. The foundation stone was laid on December 8, 1766, and the church was completed in 1786. In 1830 Simon Bolivar was buried in a vault and in 1842 he was transferred to Caracas . Pope Pius XI also awarded the cathedral the title of minor basilica in 1930. In 1953 the remains of the city's founder, Rodrigo de Bastidas, were transferred from the Dominican Republic to the cathedral in Santa Marta.

On the facade, the church door is framed by two columns on which a triangular gable rests. A rectangular bell tower rises to the left. The three-aisled basilica in the Renaissance style is equipped with barrel vaults with painted coffers into which stitch caps were cut for lighting . The central nave, together with the transept, dominates the narrow aisles with their cross vaults. Above the transept one rises dome over a round drum . The structure is supported by massive square columns.
