The Roman Catholic Church in Colombia is part of the worldwide Roman Catholic Church .
history
On January 10th and April 24th, 1534, the first bishoprics of Colombia were founded with Santa Marta and Cartagena , followed by the diocese of Popayán on August 22, 1546 and the diocese of Santafé en Nueva Granada on September 11, 1562 . The latter became the first metropolitan area in the country on March 22, 1564 . After the establishment of various dioceses in the 19th century, Colombia received its basic structure through the establishment of further dioceses until the middle of the 20th century. On September 14, 1908, the first meeting of the Colombian Bishops' Conference was opened.
The first Colombian bishop to be accepted into the college of cardinals was that of Pope Pius XII in 1953 . created Crisanto Luque Sánchez (1889–1959), Archbishop of Bogota.
Diplomatic relations have existed between Colombia and the Holy See since the first half of the 19th century , which has been represented by an Apostolic Nuncio since 1917 . Archbishop Luis Mariano Montemayor has been the nuncio in Colombia since September 2018 .
From September 6 to 11, 2017, Pope Francis visited Bogotá, Villavicencio, Medellín and Cartagena at the invitation of the President and the Bishops of Colombia.

The Roman Catholic Church in Colombia is the seventh largest "regional church" of the World Catholic Church. With 45,257,000 Catholics, 93.9% of the country's inhabitants belong to it.
The country's 78 jurisdictions are divided into 14 ecclesiastical provinces comprising 4,397 parishes and 2,769 other pastoral offices . 128 bishops, 7,236 diocesan and 2,324 religious priests and 593 permanent deacons work here . The clergy is of 1,058 monks and 13,874 nuns , 369 members of secular institutes , 33,358 lay missionaries and 55,376 catechists supported. (2017).
