The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Tunja ( lat. : Archidioecesis Tunquensis , span. : Arquidiócesis de Tunja ) is an in Colombia situated Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Tunja .

history

The Archdiocese of Tunja was on July 29, 1880 by Pope Leo XIII. Established from the cession of territory by the Archdiocese of Santafé en Nueva Granada as the Diocese of Tunja . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Santafé en Nueva Granada as a suffragan . On July 17, 1893, the Diocese of Tunja gave up parts of its territory to establish the Apostolic Vicariate Casanare . Another assignment of territory took place on March 7, 1955 to establish the diocese of Duitama .

On June 20, 1964 the Diocese of Tunja was by Pope Paul VI. raised to the archbishopric with the Apostolic Constitution Immensa Christi . The Archdiocese of Tunja gave up on April 26, 1977 parts of its territory to establish the dioceses of Chiquinquirá and Garagoa .
