The Roman Catholic Church in Peru is part of the Roman Catholic Church worldwide .

history

With the Spanish conquest in 1532–1536, the Catholic Church also found its way into Peru. The diocese of Cuzco was established on September 5, 1536 as the first diocese on the South American continent. In 1541 the diocese of Lima (from 1546 archbishopric) by Pope Paul III. founded; the first bishop was the Dominican Jerónimo de Loayza OP .

The liberation theology became known in the 1970s by the Catholic Church in Peru world; the concept of the theology of liberation was coined by the Peruvian Dominican Gustavo Gutiérrez with his book "Teología de la liberación" .

Since 1986 there has been a partnership between the Archdiocese of Freiburg and the Church in Peru.

According to the 2017 census, the Roman Catholic Church in Peru belongs to 76% of the population over twelve years of age.

The chairman of the Peruvian Bishops' Conference (CEP) for the 2018–2021 term is Héctor Miguel Cabrejos Vidarte OFM. The Apostolic Nuncio has been the Italian Archbishop Nicolas Girasoli since June 2017 .
