Gustavo Gutiérrez Merino OP (born June 8, 1928 in Lima , Peru ) is a Peruvian Roman Catholic priest , Dominican and university professor . He is one of the founders of liberation theology and its namesake.

Life

Gutiérrez studied medicine, art, philosophy, psychology and theology in Lyon , Leuven , Rome and Paris. He then worked in Peru as an advisor to the National Association of Catholic Students (UNEWC) and taught as a professor of theology and social sciences at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru in Lima. Since 1971 he has worked in the Christian Peace Conference (CFK).

In the early 1970s Gutiérrez wrote Teología de la Liberación, the fundamental work of the theology of liberation, which also gave it its name. In it he described their self-image and method, marking the beginning of a new way of practicing theology. Gutiérrez founded the Bartolomé de las Casas Institute in Lima in 1974 , of which he is director. He was visiting professor at several North American universities.

Gutiérrez also made important contributions to a “spirituality of liberation”. Life with the poor in the slums of Lima was Gutiérrez's life as the practical basis of his theology. In 2001 he joined the Dominican Order. He is currently working in the Rímac district of Lima.

Honors

Gutiérrez was appointed Doctor honoris causa at several universities , u. a. in Tübingen , Québec and Freiburg im Breisgau . In 2002 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 2003 he received the Prince of Asturias Prize in the “Communication and Human Sciences” category.
