The Spanish colonies established in the area of today's Costa Rica from 1522 and only existed for a short time were initially subject to the diocese of Santa María de La Antigua del Darién , from 1534 to the diocese of León en Nicaragua . In 1850 today's Archdiocese of San José de Costa Rica was founded as the Diocese of San José de Costa Rica .
The Universidad Católica De Costa Rica in Moray is the only Catholic university in the country and was founded in 1993.

Around 3.2 million people (around 75% of the total population) of Costa Rica are Catholics. The Catholic religion is not a state religion, but it has great social and political influence.
