The Archbishopric of Panama ( Latin Archidioecesis Panamensis , Spanish Arquidiócesis de Panamá ) is a Roman Catholic diocese based in Panama City in Panama . It includes the province of Panamá .

history

Pope Leo X founded the diocese of Santa María de La Antigua del Darién on August 28, 1513 and made it subordinate to the Archdiocese of Seville as a suffragan diocese . It was given its current name on December 7, 1520, one year after the city of Panama was founded.

The diocese was divided on April 24 and November 3, 1534 and ceded larger areas of its territory to the newly established dioceses of Cartagena and León en Nicaragua .

On February 12, 1546, the diocese became part of the ecclesiastical province of the Archdiocese of Lima . On August 22 of the same year, another territory was separated and assigned to the new establishment of the Popayán diocese .

Francisco Javier de Luna y Victoria Castro was the first bishop of Panama who laid the foundation stone for the construction of a cathedral in 1751 .

On April 22, 1836, the Archdiocese of Seville left the suffragan to the Archdiocese of Bogotá . Since 1901, the Diocese of Panama became part of the ecclesiastical province of the Archdiocese of Cartagena .

On November 29, 1925, the diocese again lost territories, this time to the newly established Apostolic Vicariate Darién , and at the same time was elevated to an archdiocese, which from now on was directly subordinate to the Holy See . Pope Pius XII decreed with the bull Etsi cotidie on March 6, 1955, the assignment of further territorial shares for the establishment of the diocese of David . At the same time the archbishopric became the metropolitan seat . The archbishopric gave up other areas to establish the dioceses of Chitré on July 21, 1962, Santiago de Veraguas on July 13, 1963 and Penonomé on December 18, 1993.

From January 22nd to 27th, 2019, the XXXIV. World Youth Day, to which Pope Francis also visited the country.
