The XXXIV. World Youth Day took place in Panama City from January 22-27, 2019 . World Youth Days are international youth meetings of the Roman Catholic Church . After the XXXI. World Youth Day in Krakow in 2016 had Pope Francis invited to Panama . This year Panama City celebrates the anniversary of its foundation 500 years ago.

The motto of World Youth Day was I am the handmaid of the Lord; happen to me as you said it ( Lk 1,38  EU ) . The patrons were the canonized Óscar Romero , José Sánchez del Río , Juan Diego , María Romero Meneses , Johannes Bosco , John Paul II , Martin von Porres and Rosa von Lima .

After a preliminary program, the main days began on January 16 with a mass with the Archbishop of Panama City , José Domingo Ulloa Mendieta . From January 23, the Pope toured the country for five days. On January 24th, Pope Francis appeared before the faithful for the first time at a welcome feast. Two days later, the highlight of World Youth Day was marked by an evening celebration ( vigil ) on "Campo San Juan Pablo II" in Metro Park. On January 27, Francis celebrated the closing service.

World Youth Day is the largest event in Panama since the United States Summit of the Organization of American States in 2015. Around 300,000 visitors were expected, including several foreign heads of state. In total, only about 120,000 participants from 155 countries came to Panama for World Youth Day, including about 2,300 from Germany. In addition to the chairman of the youth commission of the German Bishops' Conference and Bishop of Passau , Stefan Oster , nine other German bishops took part in the meeting. Around 200 pilgrims from Austria took part. Wilhelm Krautwaschl , bishop of the Graz-Seckau diocese, accompanied the Austrian pilgrims as the representative of the bishops. Around 700,000 people took part in the closing service.

Logo and anthem

The World Youth Day logo designed by Ambar Calvo has the shape of a heart or the letter "M". Together they symbolize the sentence “Bridge of the World, Heart of the Universe” and represent Mary as the bridge to Jesus in faith. In the lower right part the Panama Canal and the silhouette of Panama as a land bridge of Central America are shown. The Panama Canal represents the path of the pilgrims who find the way to encounter Jesus in Mary . In addition, the World Youth Day cross is shown in red on the left. The outline of the Blessed Mother is shown in the center in white. The crown of Mary is shown in five white dots, which at the same time symbolize the five continents. The logo was selected from 146 designs. It was unveiled by Panama's Archbishop José Domingo Ulloa Mendieta on May 14, 2017 .

The hymn of XXXIV. World Youth Day is entitled Hagase en mi, segun tu palabra (“Take my yes”) and is a composition by the musician Abdiel Jiménez .
