The World Youth Day 1987 was 6 to 12 April 1987 Buenos Aires , Argentina instead. It was the second official World Youth Day and the first to take place outside of Rome. He took place under the direction of Pope John Paul II . instead of.

Announcement and subject

On June 8, 1986, John Paul II announced that the second World Youth Day would take place in Buenos Aires.

The motto comes from the 1st letter of John 4:16: "And whoever remains in love remains in God and God remains in him".

The hymn was called "a nuevo sol" ("a new sun").

procedure

The World Youth Day took place as part of a papal visit to Uruguay and Argentina , which lasted from March 31 to April 12, 1987. He arrived in Argentina on April 6, 1987.

11 April

The opening mass took place on April 11, 1987 in the Basilica of Luján . The vigil before the final mass was divided into three sections Argentina, Latin America and the world. There was a message for each section.

12. April

The closing mass in front of the Obelisk in Buenos Aires took place on Palm Sunday , April 12, 1987 and was attended by over a million people. It was the first time in modern times that a pope spent Palm Sunday outside of Rome.

audience

More than a million people from all over the world gather on Avenida 9 de Julio in the Argentine capital. The central event took place at the Plaza de Constitución , one of the largest squares in the Argentine capital.

The cross

The cross of the World Youth Days is a 3.8 meter high wooden crucifix and was given to the youth of the world at the end of the Holy Year with the words: “Take it for the world as a sign of the body of Christ”. For the first time the cross was outside Rome as a symbol of World Youth Day.
