The motto was “You have received the spirit of sonship” ( Rom 8:15  EU ). 1.6 million people attended the closing fair.

preparation

In the message for World Youth Day , which was proclaimed in Vatican City on August 15, 1990 , John Paul II recalled the role of the Holy Spirit in the Christian life. The Pope drew attention to the nature of true freedom and responsibility of Christians towards the world. He invited the world's youth to come to the Shrine of the Black Madonna of Czestochowa in Jasna Góra . Częstochowa is not only the site of this important sanctuary, but also the home of the Pope, where he experienced the Second World War and the regime of the Soviet Union . The host city of World Youth Day, Częstochowa, was therefore of great symbolic importance.

anthem

The hymn was the song "Abba Ojcze" by the Dominican Father Jan Góra. Translated, the title is "Abba, father", where "Abba" is the Aramaic word for "father".

program

The five-day World Youth Day took place as part of a trip abroad by the Pope , who visited Poland and Hungary between August 13 and 20, 1991. The first three days were devoted to catechesis (“instruction”). The end of World Youth Day consisted of a vigil , a liturgical celebration the evening before, and a mass at the shrine of Jasna Góra.

For the first time, World Youth Day had more than a million participants from 75 countries. It is estimated that between 1.5 and 1.8 million young people accepted the invitation. Częstochowa surpassed the Buenos Aires record from 1987. For the first time, young people from the states of the former Warsaw Pact were able to take part.

Pope John Paul II spoke in Esperanto at the opening and closing of World Youth Day .
