World Youth Day 1989

The World Youth Day 1989 was one of the Roman Catholic Church organized international event for young Catholics from around the world, in the Spanish city on 19 and 20 August 1989 Santiago de Compostela took place. As the first World Youth Day, it was not held on Palm Sunday , but in the middle of summer, and was the first European World Youth Day outside of Rome . The event was attended by 600,000 people.

The motto of the 4th International World Youth Day in 1989 was I am the way, the truth and the life. ( Joh 14,6  EU ) The logo of the event consisted of a blue circle surrounded by the words of the motto. The circle was cut by a ribbon of seashells. The shells allude to the legend of the discovery of the tomb of St. James and are today symbols of pilgrims and pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela.

Many participants reached the venue by making a pilgrimage along the  Camino de Santiago .

Catecheses were organized for the first time in Santiago de Compostela . These took place on August 19, 1989 on the themes of Christ is the Way , Christ is Truth and Christ is Life , which were based on the motto of World Youth Day. Responsible for the organization of the catecheses were Chiara Lubich , the founder of the ecumenical focolare movement , the archbishops Carlo Maria Martini and Antonio Lanfranchi and the bishop Massimo Camisasca .

The final vigil and the final service with Pope John Paul II took place on Monte do Gozo , a mountain five kilometers from the city center. A memorial to the papal visit and the arrival of Francis of Assisi in the 13th century was later erected in this square .
