Chiara Lubich (born January 22, 1920 in Trento , Trentino ; † March 14, 2008 in Rocca di Papa , near Rome) was the founder of the Catholic Focolare Movement , which advocates love and ecumenism. biography

Chiara Lubich was confronted with the conflict between Christianity and Marxism in her family : her mother was a convinced Christian, her father a socialist , her brother an editor at the communist newspaper L'Unità and a partisan during Italian fascism .

Chiara Lubich first became a primary school teacher in 1938. She then taught in various Trentino villages and began studying philosophy at the University of Venice . It was not possible to finish the course because of the war .

Shaped by the experiences of the war and her strong Christian and social sense of responsibility, she founded the Focolare Movement in 1943, which is now spread in 182 countries and of which she was president until her death.

She gained great recognition for her efforts in ecumenism and interfaith dialogue . For her work, she has received numerous international prizes and honorary doctorates , including the UNESCO Prize for Peace Education in 1996 and the Council of Europe's Human Rights Prize in 1998.

She was Honorary President of the World Conference on Religion and Peace (WCRP).

She died in 2008. The funeral service took place in the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls in Rome , attended by 30,000 people . Maria Voce was elected to succeed as president of the Focolare Movement .

In 2015 the process of beatification of Chiara Lubich was opened.
