Pope visit

The Pope on his way through Rio de Janeiro.

Already on the flight to Rio de Janeiro, the Holy Father expressed his concern to journalists about the high unemployment among young people and complained that nowadays the older members of society are often pushed to the margins of society. Upon arriving at the airport , Pope Francis drove through the city in a minivan, where he was greeted by tens of thousands of people on the side of the road. The Pope's car got stuck several times in the great crowds that circled the car and threw letters and gifts through the open car window onto the back seat.

The Pope briefly changed into a helicopter and flew to the Guanabara Palace, for the official welcome by the Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff , who had already received him at the airport. After an address by the President, the Pope gave a speech. "I have neither gold nor silver, but I bring the most precious thing that has been given to me: Jesus Christ!" Said the Holy Father in Portuguese. This was followed by a visit to the President in the same building.

After the address, protesters and police officers clashed near the governor's palace, injuring an officer and a journalist. In addition to tear gas and water cannons, rubber bullets were also used by the police. The demonstrators protested against the cost of Pope Francis' visit as well as World Youth Day. However, Brazil's income on World Youth Day far exceeds its costs.

Francis used July 23 as a day of rest without an official program. Meanwhile, World Youth Day was opened on Copacabana Beach with a Holy Mass , which was celebrated by the Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro , Orani João Tempesta with 400,000 participants.

The next day, Francis visited the Brazilian pilgrimage site of Aparecida . In a church service in the Basílica de Nossa Senhora Aparecida in front of up to 200,000 people, he warned of “perishable idols” and called for a return to true faith. He portrayed money, success, power and pleasure as the idols of many young people and contrasted them with Christian values such as generosity, perseverance and brotherhood. After a self-made explosive device was found by the police in Aparecida on the previous Sunday, security measures were tightened.

Francis visits the Sao Francisco de Assis hospital in Rio de Janeiro.

On the evening of July 24th, Francis visited the Sao Francisco de Assis Hospital in Rio de Janeiro, where he inaugurated a newly established department for people with drug problems. In the courtyard of the hospital, the Pope spoke on a small platform in front of more than 500 people. The Holy Father spoke out against the liberalization of drug use. One must address the underlying problems "by advocating for more justice," he demanded. Francis met drug addicts who shared their experiences. Everyone, according to the Pope in his address, should see the other "with the loving eyes of Christ and learn to embrace those in need". This expresses closeness, affection and love. "The evil of drug trafficking, which increases violence and sows pain and death, calls for courageous action from society as a whole," added Francis.

The Holy Father visited the Mayor of Rio de Janeiro Eduardo Paes on the morning of July 25th . He received the keys to the city in his official residence. Francis blessed the flags of the 2014 soccer World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics and met Brazil's soccer legend Pelé , among others . The Pope then went to the Varginha favela , a poor district in Rio de Janeiro. There he visited the São Jerônimo Emiliano Chapel and consecrated a new altar .

The Pope then walked to a nearby soccer field. On the way there, hundreds of people lined the streets, which children gave him for blessings and gifts. The Holy Father briefly visited a small house in the slum and greeted its residents. On the sports field Francis spoke at a small grandstand to the numerous attending residents of the slum. In his address the Pope called for solidarity with the poor in the world. Everyone should contribute to "putting an end to the many social injustices." It was not egoism and individualism that built a better world, according to the Holy Father, but a "culture of solidarity" that did not see each other as a competitor.

Around noon, Pope Francis spontaneously met with young people in the Metropolitan Cathedral of São Sebastião in Rio de Janeiro. He was welcomed by the General Secretary of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference, Conferência Nacional dos Bispos do Brasil, Auxiliary Bishop Leonardo Ulrich Steiner . Towards evening Francis went to the Copacabana beach promenade for a welcome party with the young people. Around a million visitors cheered him. For half an hour, Francis drove through the crowd in an open jeep with music, chants and prayers.

In the meantime, the closing mass of World Youth Day on Sunday was moved from Guaratiba to Copacabana beach due to the bad weather .

On the morning of July 26th, Pope Francis went to the Quinta da Boa Vista Park near the Maracanã Stadium in central Rio de Janeiro. There he heard confession . In the morning, the Holy Father met juvenile prisoners in the official residence of the Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro to the exclusion of the mass media . Afterwards, Francis prayed the Angelus prayer from the balcony of the official residence with visitors in the forecourt. Then there was lunch with two young people from each continent and two young people from the host country Brazil.

In the evening the Pope drove to the Copacabana beach, where he prayed the Way of the Cross with hundreds of thousands . A total of 280 actors and amateur actors played the Stations of the Cross in scenic performances on the Copacabana, accompanied by music, chants and prayers. Francis called for us to face the evils and suffering of our time with the cross. He also remembered those who were religiously or politically persecuted. Through the cross, Jesus connect with the many young people who have lost their trust in political institutions because they see egoism and corruption .

On the morning of July 27, Pope Francis first celebrated a service with bishops , priests , consecrated persons and seminarians in the Metropolitan Cathedral of São Sebastião in Rio de Janeiro. This was followed by a meeting with the Brazilian heads of state and government in the city theater of Rio de Janeiro.

In the evening, the Holy Father met more than three million pilgrims on Copacabana Beach for a vigil ceremony . Many roads were closed to allow the youngsters to walk a kilometer-long pilgrimage to the beach. The youngsters slept with sleeping bags on the beach of Copacabana and celebrated the big closing mass of the World Youth Day with Pope Francis there the next morning. Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, Argentina's Head of State Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and Bolivia's Head of State Evo Morales attended the service. At the end of the service, Pope Francis invited to Krakow for World Youth Day 2016 .

In the afternoon the Pope met with the Coordinating Committee of CELAM in the study center of the Sumaré residence in Rio de Janeiro. According to Francis, the Church in Latin America must do more to promote its internal renewal and dialogue with the world of today. The internal renewal of the Church requires that the work of bishops and priests be more pastoral than administrative, the Pope emphasized. Not the church as an organization, but the people of God as a whole must be the beneficiaries of the church's work. It is important that the laity participate more in the mission of the Church and that bishops and priests rely on the advice of diocesan councils and parish councils . This was followed by a meeting with the World Youth Day volunteers, where the Pope expressed his personal thanks. After a farewell ceremony in the evening at the international airport of Rio de Janeiro, the Holy Father flew back to Rome .
