Irmã Dulce or Sister Dulce (* as Maria Rita de Souza Brito Lopes Pontes on May 26, 1914 in Salvador da Bahia ; † March 13, 1992 ibid.) Was a Brazilian Roman Catholic nun. She was beatified in 2011 and canonized in 2019 . In Brazil it is known as Santa Dulce dos Pobres (Saint Dulce of the Poor).

Life

Maria Rita de Souza Brito Lopes Pontes was the second of five children to dentist Augusto Lopes Pontes and his wife Dulce Maria de Souza. Her mother died when she was six years old.

At the age of 18 she joined the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of God in Sergipe and was given the religious name Dulce, after the first name of her late mother. On August 15, 1934, she made perpetual vows . In 1936, together with workers from the Itapagipe district of Salvador, she founded the São Francisco Workers 'Union ( União Operária São Francisco ), from which the Bahia Workers' Association ( Círculo Operário da Bahia ) emerged.

Irmã Dulce initially worked as a teacher, but at the same time cared for the sick and the dying. They even broke open houses to find shelter for the homeless. In 1949 she began caring for the sick in her convent's hen house and opened the Santo Antônio Hospital with 150 beds in 1960 . In 1983 she had already increased it to 1,000 beds.

On May 26, 1959, she founded the Obras Sociais Irmã Dulce (OSID) (dt. Social Welfare Sister Dulce ), in 1964 the Centro Educacional Santo Antônio (CESA) (dt. Education center Santo Antônio ) in Simões Filho for orphans.

In 1988 she was proposed for the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1992 she died after a serious lung disease.

Beatification and Canonization

The beatification process began in 2000. On May 22, 2011 she was commissioned by Pope Benedict XVI. Beatified by the retired Archbishop Geraldo Majella Agnelo in Salvador da Bahia. As part of the subsequent canonization process, Pope Francis recognized a miracle attributed to her intercession on May 13, 2019. The canonization was canonized by Pope Francis on October 13, 2019 in Rome.
