Geraldo Majella Agnelo
Geraldo Cardinal Majella Agnelo (born October 19, 1933 in Juiz de Fora , Brazil ) is a Roman Catholic Cardinal and Archbishop Emeritus of São Salvador da Bahia in Brazil .
Life
After studying Catholic theology and philosophy , Geraldo Majella Agnelo received the sacrament of ordination for the Archdiocese of São Paulo in 1957 . In a subsequent doctoral study with a stay at the Pontifical Brazilian Pius College , he acquired a doctorate in liturgy at the Pontifical Athenaeum Sant'Anselmo in Rome . After a brief activity in the community pastoral care , he was entrusted with various management and lecturing activities :
He was director of the Philosophical Seminary in Aparecida , Professor and Spiritual Rector at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Ipiranga , Professor of Liturgical Studies and Sacraments at the Theological Institute of Pius XI. as well as rector of the seminary of the Assumption.
On May 5, 1978 Pope Paul VI appointed Agnelo to the bishop of Toledo . He was ordained bishop on August 6th of the same year by the Archbishop of São Paulo, Cardinal Paulo Evaristo Arns . Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Uberaba , Benedito de Ulhôa Vieira , and Angélico Sândalo Bernardino , Auxiliary Bishop in São Paulo. The inauguration in the Diocese of Toledo took place on September 10, 1978.
On October 4, 1982, Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Londrina . On September 16, 1991 he was appointed Secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Order of the Sacraments , and on January 13, 1999, he was appointed Archbishop of São Salvador da Bahia. In the consistory of February 21, 2001, Pope John Paul II accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Gregorio Magno alla Magliana Nuova in the college of cardinals . In December 2006 the Pope appointed him one of the three presidents of the 5th General Assembly of the Latin American and Caribbean Episcopate held in Aparecida in 2007 .
On January 12, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI. Geraldo Majella Agnelo's application for resignation from the office of Archbishop of São Salvador da Bahia for reasons of age. After the resignation of Benedict XVI. he participated in the 2013 conclave .
