Ipiranga ( Portuguese Distrito Paulistano do Ipiranga ) is a district southeast of the center of São Paulo with an area of 10.5 km² and 106,865 inhabitants in 2010.

It is located in the Zona Leste and is named after the Ipiranga river , whose name comes from the Tupi-Guarani and translates as “Red River”, alluding to the water that is colored by the red earth when it rains.

The district is subordinate to the regional prefecture of the same name, Prefeitura Regional do Ipiranga , which is divided into the three districts of Cursino, Ipiranga and Sacomã. Ipiranga is divided into eight bairros: Alto do Ipiranga, Dom Pedro I, Ipiranga, Vila Carioca, Vila Eulália, Vila Independência, Vila Monumento and Vila São José.

The connection to the subway network of São Paulo and several thoroughfares have led to strong growth with accompanying property speculation in Ipiranga in recent years.

The most famous attraction is the Parque Independência with the Museu do Ipiranga (also called Museu Paulista ) with exhibits from the colonial era. Ipiranga borders the districts of Vila Carioca, Vila Independência, Vila Dom Pedro I, Sacomã and Heliópolis.

Here Dom Pedro I , the first emperor of Brazil , declared independence from the Portuguese motherland in 1822 . For this reason the Ipiranga River is mentioned in the Brazilian national anthem as follows:

Ouviram do Ipiranga as margens plácidas
de um povo heróico o brado retumbante,
eo sol da liberdade, em raios fúlgidos,
brilhou no céu da pátria nesse instante.
One could hear on the quiet banks of the Ipiranga
echo the cry of a heroic people,
the sun of freedom appeared with a shining beam
at this moment in the sky of our home.
