Giuliano Montaldo (born February 22, 1930 in Genoa ) is an Italian film director .

life and work

During his student days, Montaldo was directed by Carlo Lizzani for the lead role in his film Achtung! Banditi! (1950) committed. Acting roles with Luciano Emmer , Valerio Zurlini and Francesco Maselli followed. After this experience, Montaldo began training as an assistant director with Lizzani and Gillo Pontecorvo . His first short films were made in 1958/1959.

In 1960 he made his first full-length film Tiro al piccione about a youth in the Republic of Salò , which was shown in competition at the Venice Film Festival in 1961 . Una bella grinta followed in 1965 , for whom he wrote the script himself. The cynical plot development had the economic upturn in Italy as its subject. The film won the special jury award at the Berlinale .

Montaldo continued his career with the films Gott mit uns (1969) and Sacco e Vanzetti (1971) (see the article Sacco and Vanzetti on the historical criminal case ). For God with Us, a film about abuse of the military and religious power, it was nominated again for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival .

In 1982 he produced the monumental television series Marco Polo, for which he with the Emmy Award

In 2007 he received the David di Donatello for his life's work . With his film Der Unternehmer (L'industriale) he won the Globo d'Oro for best film in 2012 .
