Glasses with gold rim (original title: Gli occhiali d'oro ) is an Italian - French film drama from 1987. Directed by Giuliano Montaldo based on a novel by Giorgio Bassani .
action
The action takes place in Ferrara in 1938. David Lattes, a student of Jewish descent, and Athos Fadigati, a doctor who hides his homosexuality, are increasingly isolated from society.
Lattes has a relationship with Nora Treves, whose father falls ill and dies. The man is buried while maintaining the Jewish rituals. Lattes argues with his own father, who plays down the news about the persecution of the Jews in Germany. The man says something similar cannot happen in Italy, while Lattes points out that all five Jewish professors at the local university have recently been fired.
Fadigati falls in love with the beautiful student Eraldo and openly acknowledges his inclination. When he learns that he doesn't really love him, but ultimately despises him, Fadigati commits suicide by drowning himself in the river.
Reviews
Film-Dienst wrote that the film offers a “psychologically coherent, theatrically convincing representation of the isolation of a person who falls outside the framework of social norms” . He was "discreet in dealing with the topic, but non-binding as a representation of history and superficial in the lacquered visual aesthetics that would become an end in itself" .
Cinema magazine wrote that the film offered a "sensitively played outsider portrait" .
