Valeria Golino (born October 22, 1965 in Naples ) is an Italian actress and director .

Life

As the daughter of an Italian Germanist and a Greek painter, Valeria Golino grew up in Naples and Athens . During her school days, she also worked as a photo model and was discovered by Lina Wertmüller for her film Scherzo del destino in agguato dietro l'angolo come un brigante da strada (1983), for which the seventeen-year-old first appeared in a supporting role in front of the film camera. Two years later she was able to take on a leading role in Tom's Fantasies (1985). The following year was crowned by winning the first film award: for her participation in Storia d'amore (1986) she was honored as best actress at the Venice International Film Festival .

It was also because of this honor that people in Hollywood became aware of Golino. She first became known to international audiences through her role as the partner of the character played by Tom Cruise in Rain Man (1988), but was not cast because of her pronounced Italian accent for the role later taken on by Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman (1990). Golino had already made a name for himself, and this was followed by participation in successful US productions such as Hot Shots! - The mother of all films (1991), Hot Shots! The Second Attempt (1993), Leaving Las Vegas (1995), and Escape from LA (1996). In the very first row of international actor greats, however, she could not move up in the following years, in which she worked both in the USA and in Europe. This was followed by the character of Lupe Marín in the Oscar- nominated drama Frida (2002) as well as the leading role in the Italian-French production Lampedusa (2002), which has won numerous film awards . Critics praised her portrayal of Grazia , a woman plagued by mood swings and a lack of understanding of her environment, for which she was nominated for the Italian film prize David di Donatello and was awarded the Nastro d'Argento des Sindacato Nazionale Giornalisti Cinematografici Italiani (Italian Film Journalists Association).

Valeria Golino was in a relationship with the director Peter del Monte (1985–1987) and with the actors Benicio del Toro (1988–1992), Fabrizio Bentivoglio (1993–2001) and Andrea Di Stefano (2002–2006). Since 2006 she has lived with the Italian actor Riccardo Scamarcio .

In 2008 she was appointed to the competition jury of the 65th Venice Film Festival under the chairmanship of German director Wim Wenders .

In 2013, Golino made her feature film debut as a director with Miele . The film received an invitation to the Un Certain Regard section of the 66th Cannes Film Festival . In 2018 she shot her second feature film with Euforia . It was released in German cinemas in February 2020.

In 2016 she was appointed to the competition jury of the 69th Cannes Film Festival .
