Lampedusa (Original Title: Respiro ) is an Italian film that was shot in 2002 under the direction of Emanuele Crialese . It is set on the island of Lampedusa, south of Sicily , and is based on a legend that is told on the island.

action

The film is set towards the end of the 20th century. The main character Grazia lives with her husband, the fisherman Pietro, and their three children on Lampedusa. At first sight it is a family like many others in the small village community. But Grazia suffers from a manic-depressive illness ( bipolar disorder ). It oscillates between joie de vivre and exuberance on the one hand and sadness or outbursts of anger on the other. She bathes naked in the sea, stands with the men on the street and often does not behave as befits the women here.

The village community simply thinks they are crazy. Pietro and the children love her and have learned to deal with Grazia's whims. Only when she becomes more and more unpredictable and the villagers put him under pressure does Pietro decide to send her to a sanatorium in Milan for a few weeks. To avoid this, Grazia flees to the uninhabited cliffs of the island. She is supported by her son Pasquale. He shows her a grotto as a shelter, provides her with food and does not tell anyone about it.

In the following days, Pietro and the fishermen set out to find his wife, and when her dress is discovered on a remote beach, everyone is dismayed to have driven Grazia into suicide. Pietro mourns, Pasquale is silent to protect his mother, and the family is only slowly returning to island life. On the occasion of the annual Bartholomew Festival, the villagers gather on the beach and light several large fires. Suddenly Pietro goes into the water, Grazia swims in the sea. The residents assume a miracle and in a surrealistic scene they swim around Grazia to take her back into the community.

Filming

Crialese shot his film in the style of Italian neorealism . Except for Valeria Golino and Vincenzo Amato, only amateur actors from Lampedusa were involved.

Reviews

“In fact, the Italian director Emanuele Crialese doesn't just tell the unusual story of an unusual woman. Rather, he succeeds in drawing a picturesque portrait of a region and its people. "

"Sensitive character study of a woman beyond the norms and social reactions to her behavior, whereby social and sexual problems are only hinted at, since the film is mainly limited to atmospherically beautiful pictures."

Awards

The film was awarded nine film prizes, including a. twice at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2002 and once at the David di Donatello award ceremony in 2003.
