Emanuele Crialese

Emanuele Crialese (* 1965 in Rome ) is an Italian screenwriter and film director .

Crialese went to the United States in 1991 and studied film directing at the Tish School of Arts in New York . Here he shot the short film Heartless in 1994 and the feature film Once we were strangers in 1997 .

He then retired to the island of Lampedusa , south of Sicily , for six months . A legend told there inspired him to make his film Lampedusa in 2002 .

In his film Golden Door , which premiered in 2006, Crialese dealt with the issue of the emigration of impoverished Sicilians to America at the beginning of the 20th century.

In 2011, Crialese took on the Italian refugee policy with Terraferma and filmed the life of a sub-Saharan woman who stranded on the island of Lampedusa on her way to mainland Europe.
