In love with danger (Original title: Year of the Gun ) is an American thriller from 1991. The director was John Frankenheimer , the screenplay was written by David Ambrose based on a novel by Michael Mewshaw . The main roles were played by Andrew McCarthy and Sharon Stone .

action

January 1978, there is a dirty war on the streets of Italy ( anni di piombo ). The attractive photo reporter Alison King comes to Rome to do a report on the Red Brigades , an underground communist organization. She turns to the American David Raybourne, who is said to be writing a book about the Red Brigades. King asks if he can arrange a meeting with the Red Brigades for her.

Shortly after the first conversation in a restaurant, King and Raybourne get into a demonstration. King photographs the riot and is injured in the process. Raybourne remarks that she must love danger . Although he has an Italian girlfriend, Lia, he starts an affair with King.

In David's apartment, Alison finds the hidden manuscript of the book, a novel in which the Red Brigades are kidnapping Aldo Moro . The content of the novel is known in their environment. Suddenly King and Raybourne are chased by the terrorists who are really planning the kidnapping of Aldo Moro and want to know who knows the novel. King and Raybourne escape and Lia is asked to take them to safety in her car. It turns out she works for the Red Brigades and turns King and Raybourne over to the terrorists.

King and Raybourne are interrogated in the terrorists' hideout. Alison is suspected by the Red Brigades of being a CIA spy . During this time, Lias comrades criticized her for leading a civil life. Aldo Moro is kidnapped. The terrorists want to release King and Raybourne when they leave Italy. They are driven to a remote location, masked terrorists stand in front of them with weapons ready to fire. Lia tells David that she can't help him anymore. Shortly afterwards, she is shot by her accomplices; the leader of the terrorists orders King to document with photos how the Red Brigades deal with the traitors .

The novel, written by Raybourne and illustrated with King's photos, becomes a bestseller. Raybourne tells about the background on a television show, King is connected from Beirut .

criticism

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of November 1, 1991 that David Raybourne would experience a situation similar to that in the Alfred Hitchcock films : An innocent man who would be falsely accused and in danger. He praised the portrayal of Andrew McCarthy and the images of Rome that would add freshness to the film, which contained some familiar elements .

Awards

John Frankenheimer was nominated in 1991 for the Critics' Prize of the French Festival du Film Américain de Deauville .
