John Pankow

John Pankow (born April 28, 1954 in St. Louis , Missouri ) is an American actor .

Life

Pankow grew up as the sixth of nine children in Chicago . He began studying drama at Northeastern Illinois University ; However, after seeing the play American Buffalo by David Mamet at the St. Nicholas Theater, he dropped out and began a two-year internship with the ensemble of this theater. On a visit to New York in 1980 he auditioned for a role in the television drama Life on the Mississippi and was cast. He has starred in a number of off-Broadway and Shakespeare productions for the New York Shakespeare Festival . Eventually he played on Broadway , where he was Tim Curry's substitute as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in Peter Shaffer's Amadeus from 1980 to 1983 .

Pankow appeared in a number of films by well-known directors: Under William Friedkin , he played in the action thriller Life and Death in LA (1985) the role of a Secret Service agent who, together with his partner ( William L. Petersen ) Money forger ( Willem Dafoe ) hunts. In the crime film Deadly Thoughts (1991) by Alan Rudolph Pankow played on the side of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis . He also had roles in films by Herbert Ross ( The Secret of My Success ) , George A. Romero ( The Monkey In Humans ) , Oliver Stone ( Talk Radio ) , John Frankenheimer (In Love With Danger ) and Sidney Lumet ( Gentle Eyes Don't Lie , alongside Melanie Griffith ).

In television series Pankow mostly appeared in supporting roles. From 1993 to 1999 he served as Ira Buchman in the sitcom Mad About You (Mad About You) on the side of Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt to see. For this role he was nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award as a member of the acting ensemble in 1997 and 1998 .

In 2004 Pankow returned to Broadway (among others in The Twelve Jurors , nominated for the Tony Award for best production of the year).

Pankow has been married to actress Kristine Sutherland since 1986 and the couple have one child.
