San Romano in Garfagnana is an Italian municipality in the province of Lucca with 1384 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
geography
The place is in the upper Serchio Valley in the Garfagnana and belongs to the Comunità Montana della Garfagnana . The municipality is part of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines National Park . The municipality is located about 40 km north of the provincial capital Lucca and about 85 km northwest of the regional capital Florence in the climatic classification of Italian municipalities in zone E, 2 805 GG. The Serchio River spends 5 of its 106 km in the municipal area. The community belongs to the Archdiocese of Lucca .
The village also includes the districts Caprignana (842 m, approx. 60 inhabitants), Cerreta (425 m, approx. 40 inhabitants), Naggio (475 m, approx. 50 inhabitants), Orzaglia (759 m, approx. 50 inhabitants), Sillicagnana (491 m, approx. 320 inhabitants), Verrucole (655 m, approx. 50 inhabitants), Vibbiana (765 m, approx. 70 inhabitants) and Villetta (448 m, approx. 32 inhabitants). The main town of San Romano in Garfagnana has about 280 inhabitants.
The neighboring municipalities are Camporgiano , Piazza al Serchio , Pieve Fosciana , Sillano Giuncugnano and Villa Collemandina .
history
The Località Naggio , below Verrucole Castle , was first documented as Vico Agio in 793 . Until the end of the 13th century, the main town of San Romano belonged to the Gherardinghi . Then the place came under the control of Lucca. After the death of Castruccio Castracani , the place went to the Malaspina and returned to Lucca in 1369 on the instructions of Charles IV . After the fall of the Lucchese ruler Paolo Guinigi in 1430, the place was pending in Florence for 8 years and then sought protection from Leonello d'Este from the Este family and thus became part of the Provincia Estense di Garfagnana .

- Chiesa di San Lorenzo , church in the Verrucole district, mentioned in the 15th century. Suffered damage in the 1920 earthquake and was restored in the following years. In 1985 the campanile was restored.
