Portrait of Lionello d'Este by Pisanello

Leonello d'Este (born September 21, 1407 - October 1, 1450 ) was from 1441 Marchese ( Margrave ) of Ferrara from the House of Este .

He was the second of three illegitimate sons of Niccolò III. d'Este with Stella de 'Tolomei .

He received his military training from the Condottiere Braccio da Montone , his humanistic training from Guarino da Verona . After the execution of his older brother Ugo Aldobrandino in 1425, he became Niccolò's sole heir. In 1441 he inherited his father's property in northern Italy.

He and later his brothers Borso , Ercole I and Alfonso I made Ferrara one of the centers of humanistic culture and art. To this end, they exploited the state's economic resources by using the public revenues for military expenditure and, in some cases, for works of art.

A medal by Pisanello shows the margrave's head, turned to the left, with his name and title over a juniper branch in Latin. The reverse side shows symbols of human transience, circumscribed by the name of the artist and bordered by juniper branches in the lower margin.
