Ercole I. d'Este

Ercole I. d'Este (born October 26, 1431 in Ferrara ; † June 15, 1505 ibid) was one of Niccolòs III's legitimate children . d'Este , the Marquis of Ferrara, Modena and Reggio from the House of Este . He succeeded his half-brother Borso d'Este on August 20, 1471 as Duke of the named areas.

Ercole's achievement is the economic and cultural prosperity of his duchies. From 1490 he had Ferrara fortified by the architect Biagio Rossetti (1447–1516), but also expanded, with wide and straight streets being built for the first time in Europe - with a medieval town center .

Ercole I was married to Eleonora of Aragón (1450–1493), the daughter of King Ferdinand I , since July 3, 1473 . He and his wife had six children, four of whom are major members of the family, and at least one other was out of wedlock.
