Francesco II Gonzaga
Francesco II. Gonzaga (also: Gianfrancesco II. Gonzaga) (* August 10, 1466 in Mantua ; † March 29, 1519 there ) was the eldest son of Margrave Federico I Gonzaga of Mantua and ruled as his successor (1484–1519) .
The enthusiastic hunter enjoyed excellent training in the prince school founded by Vittorino da Feltre .
He married 16-year-old Isabella d'Este on February 12, 1490 in Mantua (* May 18, 1474 - February 13, 1539), daughter of Duke Ercole I of Ferrara . His father had campaigned for Isabella for his son twelve years earlier.
Francesco II was a famous condottiere . He entered the military service of the Duchy of Milan in 1484 , served as a military commander in Venice from 1489 to 1498 and had Mantua ruled by his wife Isabella during this time. In the battle of Fornovo he defeated the French under King Charles VIII . In 1499 he changed sides again and offered his services to the French King Louis XII. and worked for this in 1503 as governor-general in the Kingdom of Naples . In 1509 he fought against Venice, was captured and was only released a year later as an independent third party in exchange for his son ( Federico II Gonzaga ) in Rome. He then entered papal services, whereby he was in 1510 under Pope Julius II. Supreme Commander of the papal troops ( Gonfaloniere di Santa Romana Chiesa).
Francesco and Isabella had seven children:

- Federico II Gonzaga (* 1500, † 1540), Margrave of Mantua 1519, 1st Duke of Mantua 1530, Margrave of Montferrat 1533, ⚭ 1531 Margaret of Montferrat (1510–1566), daughter of Margrave Wilhelm XI.
- Ippolita Gonzaga (born November 13, 1503, † March 16, 1570), nun
- Ercole Gonzaga (born November 22, 1505 - † March 2, 1563 in Trento ), cardinal 1527, regent for his nephew 1540
- Ferrante I. Gonzaga (* 1507, † 1557), Count of Guastalla 1539, Viceroy of Sicily 1536–1546, Viceroy of Milan since 1546 ⚭ 1529 Isabella of Capua († 1559), daughter of Prince Ferdinand of Molfetta
- Livia Gonzaga (* 1509, † 1569), nun and abbess
