Gianfrancesco I. Gonzaga

Gianfrancesco I. Gonzaga (* June 1395 in Mantua , † September 25, 1444 ibid) was the son of Francesco I. Gonzaga , Count of Mantua, and his successor from 1407. He was 1433 on the occasion of the engagement of his son Ludovico III. Gonzaga and Barbara von Brandenburg were appointed Margrave of Mantua by Emperor Sigismund .

Life

He was married to Paola Malatesta (1393–1449) since August 22, 1409 , daughter of Malatesta IV Malatesta, Signore di Pesaro and Elisabetta da Varano. With her he had seven children:

  • Ludovico III. Gonzaga (1412–1478), Margrave of Mantua
  • Carlo Gonzaga (* between 1413 and 1423 † 1456) ⚭ 1437 Lucia d'Este (* March 24, 1419 - June 28, 1437), daughter of Niccolò III. d'Este
  • Margherita Gonzaga († July 7, 1439) ⚭ January 1435 Leonello d'Este (1407–1450)
  • Gianlucido Gonzaga (1421 - June 11, 1448)
  • Cecilia Gonzaga (1425–1451), nun in the Santa Chiara monastery in Mantua
  • Leonella Gonzaga, nun

In 1423 he brought Vittorino da Feltre to his court to educate his children.
