Stazzema is an Italian municipality with 2996 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Lucca in Tuscany .

geography

Stazzema is located on the western slope of the Apuan Alps , near the Tyrrhenian coast . The place belongs to Versilia . The municipality is located about 25 km northwest of the provincial capital Lucca and about 85 km northwest of the regional capital Florence in the climatic classification of Italian communities in zone F, 3 074 GG. The Torrenti Turrite Cava and Turrite Secca , both of which serve as a right tributary to the Serchio, arise in the eastern municipality .

The districts include Arni, Campagrina, Cardoso, Farnocchia, Gallena, La Culla - Sant'Anna , Levigliani, Mulina, Palagnana, Pomezzana, Pontestazzemese (town hall), Pruno, Retignano , Ruosina, Stazzema, Terrinca and Volegno.

The neighboring municipalities are Camaiore , Careggine , Fabbriche di Vergemoli , Massa ( MS ), Molazzana , Pescaglia , Pietrasanta , Seravezza and Vagli Sotto .

history

The district of Sant'Anna di Stazzema was destroyed on August 12, 1944 by Waffen-SS troops, and its residents, around 560 people, mostly women and children, were killed. This is considered to be one of the cruelest massacres of civilians in World War II.

  • In 2013, Federal President Joachim Gauck visited Sant'Anna di Stazzema with his Italian counterpart Giorgio Napolitano .
  • The German musician couple Westermann has successfully collected money for the restoration of the organ in the church that was destroyed in the massacre with their initiative "Friedensorgel".
  • In 2018, the mayor launched the virtual citizens' register Anagrafe Nazionale Antifascista with the "Stazzema Charter" .
