The Antro del Corchia is a karst cave on the western slope of the Apuan Alps in northwestern Tuscany . It is located in the municipality of Stazzema .

The name of the cave comes from Monte Corchia ( 1678  m slm ), on the southern slope of which the entrance is located.

geography

The cave system is connected to the Farolfi and Fighierà caves , which are also located in the Corchia massif. Together these caves form one of the longest karst cave systems in Italy with 64 km of known passages. The expansion in height is given as 1187 m. The cave has over 20 entrances at different sea levels, which leads to air circulation in the cave and explains the nickname Buca d'Eolo . The age of the cave is roughly 2 million years. The temperature in the cave is 7.6 ° C.

Two kilometers are open to visitors. The cave entrance for visitors is in the Levigliani district at 860  m slm and was artificially created.

geology

The limestone of the Apuan Alps belong to the Upper Triassic , with a later metamorphosis to marble. This prevails on Monte Corchio and was mined above Levigliani until 1970. At Levigliani there are also smaller deposits of silver , mercury , cinnabar and other mercury sulphides that were exploited in the past and are visible in the cave. The deposits of the cave (in cave lakes, stalagmites , stalactites ) are explored to determine the paleoclimate . The Antro del Corchio is a promising source for reconstructing the paleoclimate in the Mediterranean.

Discovery story

The discoverer of the cave was the son of the mayor of Stazzema , Emilio Simi , in 1840 . In 1980 the entrance to the Farolfi Cave and about a year later its connection with the Antro del Corchia was discovered. In 2001 the Antro del Corchia was opened to the public.
