Versilia
The Versilia is a coastal landscape in the north-western Tuscany in the provinces of Lucca and Massa-Carrara . It is named after the 12 km long Versilia river .
geography
"Versilia storica" and "Versilia turistica"
Versilia lies between the Ligurian Sea and the Apuan Alps . Historically, the area of the municipalities of Pietrasanta , Seravezza , Stazzema and Forte dei Marmi was initially called Versilia. Today the term Versilia includes the basin of Camaiore and the coastal plain as far as Viareggio. The so-called "extended Versilia" ("Versilia turistica") stretches from Marina di Massa to Viareggio and is characterized by an approximately 30 km long, touristically developed sandy beach coast, which has nothing to do with the original Versilia, because only the four (above mentioned) municipalities that are wetted by the Versilia river or its tributaries Serra (formerly Rio Magno) and Vezza (formerly Rio Ruosina), initially belonged to Versilia ("Versilia storica").
"Alta Versilia"
"Alta Versilia" only refers to the municipality of Stazzema and the villages and hamlets of the municipality of Seravezza , which are located at the foot of or in the Apuan Alps.
Streets and pilgrimage routes
The area is crossed by the historic Via Francigena (pilgrimage route to Rome ) and the Via Aurelia . The area is also on the SS 1 , which connects Pisa with Genoa .
description
While the coast used to be marshy and barely populated in many sections, it is today characterized by a number of seaside resorts . T. be visited since the 19th century . There you will find glamorous villas and hotel buildings, as well as guest houses and holiday apartments . The area is frequented by Italian and foreign tourists.
The hilly hinterland rises to the nearby Apuan Alps . The earlier predominant agriculture with sweet chestnuts, olive and wine cultivation, as well as marble quarrying is losing its importance compared to tourism , as many private holiday homes are for rent for tourists who prefer the warmer and troubled plains. Also very suitable for hikers.
