Seravezza is an Italian municipality in the province of Lucca in Tuscany with 12,771 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

geography

Seravezza is located in the hinterland of Versilia on the slopes of the Apuan Alps , the highest peak of which is the Altissimo at 1589 m in the municipality . The highest quarry for Carrara marble is on the Altissimo . The Versilia River arises in Seravezza from the confluence of the Serra and Vezza rivers. The origin of the name "Seravezza" is not, as many might think, named after the two rivers that flow through the city. The exact opposite is the case: it is the city that gives the name to the two rivers. The name Seravezza comes from the Lombard "Sala Vetitia", which means a center of trade. The rivers used to be called Rio Magno (Serra) and Fiume Ruosina (Vezza).

The eponymous district of Seravezza (approx. 1100 inhabitants) houses the administration of the municipality, but the more important center is Querceta (approx. 5800 inhabitants). The other districts (fractions) include Azzano (approx. 330 inhabitants), Basati (approx. 160 inhabitants), Cerreta Sant'Antonio (approx. 80 inhabitants), Fabbiano (approx. 95 inhabitants), Giustagnana (approx. 140 inhabitants) , Minazzana (approx. 120 inhabitants), Pozzi (approx. 2825 inhabitants), Riomagno (approx. 225 inhabitants), Ripa (approx. 1625 inhabitants) and Ruosina (approx. 85 inhabitants).

The neighboring municipalities are Forte dei Marmi , Massa ( MS ), Montignoso ( MS ), Pietrasanta and Stazzema .

Attractions

The Villa Medici of Seravezza was built in the 16th century by Cosimo I de 'Medici and was the summer residence of the Medici family . Today it houses a museum for traditional crafts of Versilia and has rooms for changing exhibitions of modern and contemporary art.
