history

Giusto Utens : The Villa Medici around 1600

The villa was built under Cosimo I between 1555 and 1564. Both Bartolomeo Ammanati and Bernardo Buontalenti are possible architects . At that time, the former was in the service of the Medici with the renovation of the Palazzo Pitti , while the similarities with the Villa Artimino speak for Bernardo Buontalenti.

The area around Forte dei Marmi fell to Florence in an arbitration decision by Pope Leo X in 1513. Cosimo I. immediately brought the rich lead and silver mines as well as the marble quarries under his control. The Villa Seravezza served to secure this claim.

Like many Medici villas , Seravezza came to the House of Lorraine after the death of the last Grand Duke of Tuscany, Gian Gastone, in 1737 . Today it is used by the Seravezza municipality for exhibitions and events and houses the Museo del Lavoro e delle Tradizioni Popolari della Versilia Storica and the city library.

The staircase leading to the piano nobile is reached through a portico . At the corners of the building there are pointed corner bastions with edges made of bosses ashlars . A simple chapel stands a little apart.

There is no trace of the former garden.
