Villa del Trebbio
The Villa del Trebbio is an early Medici villa in Tuscany . It is near San Piero a Sieve in the Mugello area. It was one of the first Medici villas outside of Florence and in its dominant hilltop position it still shows a defensive character, also in terms of its type of construction.
Il Trebbio (derived from the Latin trivium for fork in the road) was owned by Giovanni di Bicci de 'Medici , the founder of the Banco Medici . His son and heir, Cosimo de 'Medici , had it built into a fortress after Giovanni's death (1428) by his house architect Michelozzo .
A terrace garden with two pergolas was already used by Cosimo as a place of rest and relaxation (only the upper pergola has been preserved ). Cosimo I de 'Medici , Grand Duke of Tuscany liked to hunt here and had the villa expanded, his son Ferdinando I de' Medici also liked to stay here. Ferdinando II. De 'Medici sold the estate to Giuliano Serragli in 1644, who gave it to the Oratorians .
The villa is currently (2011) privately owned. However, there are limited opportunities to visit.
