The villa today

The Villa di Montevettolini is a Medici villa in the municipality of Monsummano Terme in Tuscany .

The villa, also called Monte Vetturino , was built after 1595 at the behest of the Grand Duke Ferdinando I de 'Medici on a hill at the foot of Monte Albano. The architect was Gherardo Mechini, a student of Bernardo Buontalenti . Remnants of older buildings were included. The villa building, completed around 1620, looks austere and compact and more military than lust castle-like. It served as the seat of the administration of the surrounding Medici estates. Ferdinando I used it frequently. His grandson Ferdinando II. De 'Medici sold the villa and its lands to the Bartolomei family in 1650. In 1871 Prince Marcantonio Borghese bought the property and tried to restore the villa, which had since been greatly modified, to the character of the late 16th century. The Monevettolini villa is still owned by the Borghese heirs and is not open to the public.
