The Villa di Cerreto Guidi is a Medici villa in the center of the municipality of Cerreto Guidi at the address Via dei Ponti Medicei 7. Since 2002 it houses a hunting museum, the Museo storico della caccia e del territorio .

history

A castle of Count Guidi in a strategically favorable hillside location was the forerunner of the villa built under Cosimo I de 'Medici around 1555, a rather simple hunting lodge. The architect is unknown, the enormous outside staircase was used for an attribution to Bernardo Buontalenti , other studies suggest that it will be realized later. Davide Fortini , a former employee of the Tribolo , was in charge of site supervision.

On July 15, 1576, Isabella de 'Medici was strangled here at the instigation of her betrayed husband Paolo Giordano I. Orsini . At that time the villa belonged to her brother Don Giovanni de 'Medici . He bequeathed it to his nephew Don Lorenzo de 'Medici in 1621 . Other owners were Grand Duke Cosimo II. De 'Medici and his son Cardinal Leopoldo de' Medici , who had it rebuilt after this Grand Duke Cosimo III. de 'Medici , from whose time two inventories of the property have been preserved.

The Lorraine family gave the villa to the Tonini family from Pistoia in 1780. Other private owners followed. In 1966 Rodolfo Geddes sold the property to Galliano Boldrini, who donated it to the state in 1969 with the condition that a museum be set up in it. Neoclassical frescoes of the 19th century have survived of the artistic jewelry, the interior was designed as closely as possible to the two inventories of the early 18th century.
