Cosimo II de 'Medici

Cosimo II. De 'Medici (born May 12, 1590 in Florence ; † February 28, 1621 there ) from the Medici family was the successor of his father Ferdinando I as Grand Duke of Tuscany since 1609 . His mother was Christine von Lorraine .

Life

In the fall of 1610, he appointed his former teacher Galileo Galilei to court mathematician and philosophers of the First and professor of mathematics in Pisa - without any teaching duties. He was given full freedom to devote himself entirely to research. Cosimo later worked as Galileo's protector against the Inquisition .

On October 19, 1608, Cosimo married Maria Magdalena of Austria , daughter of Archduke Karl . The couple had eight children:

  • Francesco (October 16, 1614 - July 25, 1634)

  • Leopoldo (6 November 1617 - 10 November 1675), 1663 cardinal

Cosimo II, who suffered from stomach ulcers, tuberculosis and osteoarthritis, died on February 28, 1621 in Florence.
