In the middle of the 13th century the two places belonged to different camps in the conflict between Ghibellines and Guelfs : Vagli di Sopra belonged to the Ghibellines, Vagli di Sotto to the Guelfs. In the 14th century the places suffered several times from the conflict between Lucca and Pisa, in the 15th century Florence was added as the third party to the conflict, so that the two places finally turned to Borso d'Este in June 1451 and thus the Este from Ferrara imputed.
