Fabbriche di Careggine is a ghost village in the Italian municipality of Careggine in the province of Lucca .

history

The place was founded in the 13th century by blacksmiths from Brescia . In 1947 the town had to be left by the residents because the town on the Edron fell victim to the artificial reservoir Lago di Vagli . The Lago di Vagli is the largest reservoir in Tuscany, it is located in the municipality of Careggine and Vagli Sotto . The dam with a height of 96 meters was built between 1947 and 1953, the power plant is operated by the electricity company ENEL .

Appearance of the ghost village

The reservoir water is drained approximately every ten years for maintenance work. This took place in 1958, 1974, 1983 and 1994. Then the ruins of the San Teodoro Church, built in 1590, and the surrounding houses reappear and the paese fantasma ("ghost village") becomes a tourist attraction. On the occasion of the last appearance of the ghost village from the floods, around a million visitors from all over the world came to see the ruins.

At the beginning of June 2020, the news that the reservoir would again be drained was planned for 2021, causing a worldwide stir. The news was spread by Lorenza Giorgi, the daughter of a former mayor.
