Careggine is an Italian municipality in the province of Lucca in Tuscany with 533 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Location of Careggine in the province of Lucca

Careggine is located in Garfagnana in a side valley of the Serchio . The community is part of the Apuan Alps Nature Park . It is located about 84 km northwest of the regional capital Florence and 34 km northwest of the provincial capital Lucca in the climatic classification of Italian communities in zone F, 3 512 GG.

Important bodies of water in the municipal area are the Torrenti Turrite Secca (6 of 21 km in the municipality) and Edron (3 of 8 km). Both are right tributaries of the Serchio. The Edron previously flows through the Lago di Vagli reservoir , which is partly part of the local area.

The districts (frazioni) include Capanne (840 m, approx. 30 inhabitants), Colli (924 m, approx. 30 inhabitants), Isola Santa (550 m, approx. 25 inhabitants), Le Coste (800 m, approx Inhabitants), Pierdiscini (1077 m, approx. 60 inhabitants) and Porreta (952 m, approx. 50 inhabitants). The main town Careggine has about 300 inhabitants. A former district is Fabbriche di Careggine .

The neighboring municipalities are Camporgiano , Castelnuovo di Garfagnana , Molazzana , Stazzema and Vagli Sotto .

In the Isola Santa district, excavations in 1976/77 found ancient and Middle Stone Age stone tools.
