history

Location of Castiglione in the north of the Republic of Lucca on the border with Modena , on a map by Nicolas Sanson from the 17th century

The place and the church of San Pietro were first mentioned in the 8th century, when the Lombards ruled over the place. Between 1149 and 1168 the place took part several times in the armed conflicts between Lucca and Pisa and stood on the side of Pisa. The place was captured by Lucca in 1168 after a long siege and the leader from Castiglione, Veltro da Corvaia, was murdered. Two years later, Lucca gave permission to rebuild the castle. When Castiglione approached Pisa again around 1226, the castle of Lucca was destroyed again and rebuilt in 1230. In 1356 the place belonged to Pisa and was besieged unsuccessfully by the sons of Castruccio Castracani . The place came to Lucca in 1371. The present fortification of the place with the five defense towers (Brunella, dell'Orologio, del Fattori, di San Michele and di San Pietro), which is 750 m long and equipped with four city gates, dates from this time. Florence ruled the place from 1429 to 1433 , after which the rule went back to Lucca. At the beginning of the 17th century, Castiglione was besieged several times by the Estonians (1602, 1603 and 1613), but stayed with Lucca.
