Molazzana is an Italian municipality in the province of Lucca with 1038 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
geography
The municipality is located about 26 km north of the provincial capital Lucca and about 75 km northwest of the regional capital Florence in the climatic classification of Italian municipalities in zone E, 2,630 GG. The place is in the Garfagnana landscape in the Serchio Valley. The Serchio runs in the east of the municipality, which borders the river only a few meters. In the northwest runs the Torrente Turrite Secca (7 of 21 km in the municipality), a right tributary of the Serchio.
The municipal area also includes the districts (Frazioni) Brucciano (660 m, approx. 15 inhabitants), Cascio (444 m, approx. 60 inhabitants), Eglio (700 m, approx. 100 inhabitants), Montaltissimo (600 m, approx. 60 Inhabitants) and Sassi (691 m, approx. 180 inhabitants). The place Molazzana has about 100 inhabitants.
The neighboring municipalities are Barga , Careggine , Castelnuovo di Garfagnana , Fabbriche di Vergemoli , Gallicano and Stazzema .
history
The place was first mentioned in 997 by Gherardo, Bishop of Lucca . Since the 10th century the place was a fiefdom of the Porcaresi. In 1272 Lucca succeeded in bringing the place under his control. After the death of Castruccio Castracani , the place fell under the control of Pisa. Under Charles IV , Pisa's rule over Lucca ended and Molazzana came under the leadership of Lucca again. Around 1430 he was again in conflict between Florence, Lucca and Pisa and looked to Niccolò III. d'Este from the family of Este of Ferrara protection.

- Castello di Molazzana , today's castle ruins in the center of Molazzana. The castle was created by the Porcaresi, probably over an older fortification that was built before the year 1000. Within the complex was the church of San Bartolomeo, which was destroyed in the earthquake of 1855 except for the campanile . Other parts of the castle were destroyed in the earthquake of 1920.

- Rocca di Sassi , castle in the Sassi district. The first castle was built around the 11th and 12th centuries by the Porcaresi. After an uprising by the people of Sassi, the castle was destroyed in 1370. The present castle in the same place was built under the Estensi in the 15th century.
