Sassi (also Sassi di Garfagnana ) is a district ( fraction , Italian frazione ) of the Italian municipality of Molazzana in the province of Lucca in Tuscany .

geography

The place is about 2.5 kilometers northwest of the capital Molazzana, about 28 km northwest of the provincial capital Lucca and about 75 km northwest of the regional capital Florence in the upper valley of the Serchio (Valle superiore del Serchio). The place is at 691  m slm and had 166 inhabitants in 2001. In 2011 there were 166 inhabitants. The river Serchio runs about 4 km north and east of the place, the river Turrite Secca flows about 1 km northwest. The closest place is Eglio (also a district of Molazzana) about 1 km south.

history

The place was first mentioned in 844 as Saxi finibus Castronovo . In 952 Sassi is mentioned with the Nachbachort Eglio in a document from Lucca, in which the places are described as belonging to Pieve Fosciana . The place is also mentioned in 1105 as Saxi by Mathilde von Canossa and in 1168 by Pope Alexander III. In the 13th century Sassi became the Dominium of Lucca, after which it belonged to the Vicariate of Barga (1272), Camporgiano (1313) and Gallicano . After the liberation of Lucca by Charles IV , Sassi fell back to Lucca until Lucca was protected by Niccolò III in 1430 . d'Este was looking. The place remained with the d'Este until the unification of Italy. During the Second World War , Sassi was at the Gothic position and was bombed several times.

  • San Frediano , church in the center that belongs to the Archdiocese of Lucca . Was built in 1642 as a chapel in honor of the Madonna di Loreto, was enlarged in 1803 and was given its current name in 1827. The old church of San Frediano, which was probably built around the year 1000, is located by the castle and is now used as a cemetery chapel.
  • Rocca di Sassi , castle northwest of the village. The first fortification was destroyed in the 14th century. After the reconstruction, the bishop of Lucca gave the castle complex to the lords of Dalli (today a district of Sillano Giuncugnano ), after which the castle belonged to the d'Este from Ferrara , who expanded the complex. Ercole II. D'Este gave the fortress to local rulers from the town in 1537, after which the demilitarized complex began to fall apart. Today there is still a watchtower and some remains of the wall.
  • San Rocco , church with portico south of the town center on the road to Eglio, which belongs to the Archdiocese of Lucca. Originated in the 17th century and was severely damaged in World War II. The restoration took place in 1945.
