Gallicano is an Italian commune with 3618 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Lucca . The place is in the Serchio Valley and belongs to the Garfagnana .

Location of the municipality of Gallicano in the province of Lucca

The municipality is located about 24 km north of the provincial capital Lucca and about 72 km northwest of the regional capital Florence in the climatic classification of Italian municipalities in zone E, 2 183 GG. The place is in the Garfagnana landscape in the Serchio Valley . The Serchio (9 of 106 km in the municipality) runs in the east of the municipality as a municipality boundary. The Torrente Turrite Cava (3 of 11 km in the municipal area) serves as the southeastern municipal boundary and flows here to the Serchio from the right. Another important body of water is the Torrente Turrite di Gallicano (8 of 14 km in the municipality), which is also a right tributary of the Serchio and flows through the center of Gallicano.

The community also includes the districts (Frazioni) Bolognana (175 m, approx. 280 inhabitants), Cardoso (394 m, approx. 180 inhabitants), Colle Acinaia (150 m, approx. 50 inhabitants), Fiattone - Campo - Perpoli ( exclave , 445 inhabitants), La Barca (193 m, approx. 100 inhabitants), Ponte di Campia (200 m, approx. 85 inhabitants), Trassilico (722 m, approx. 100 inhabitants), Turritecava (135 m, approx. 30 inhabitants ) and Verni (500 m, approx. 100 inhabitants). About 2500 inhabitants live in the main town of Gallicano.

The neighboring municipalities are Barga , Borgo a Mozzano , Castelnuovo di Garfagnana , Coreglia Antelminelli , Fabbriche di Vergemoli , Fosciandora and Molazzana .

history

The place was first mentioned historically in 771 in a document from the Archdiocese of Lucca . The medieval fortifications in the village of Perpoli and the castle in Trassilico served to protect Serchio in the conflicts between Lucca , Florence and Modena . Trassilico was an independent municipality until after the Second World War.
