Borgo a Mozzano is located in the Serchio Valley in Garfagnana about 15 km north of the provincial capital Lucca and about 62 km northwest of the regional capital Florence in the climatic classification of Italian municipalities in zone D, 2 020 GG. In addition to the Serchio (14 km in the municipality), other important bodies of water in the municipality are the Torrenti Lima (2 km in the municipality), Turrite Secca (2 km in the municipality), Celetra (4 km in the municipality), Pedogna (4 km in the municipality), Pizzorna (4 km in the municipality) and Socciglia (6 km in the municipality).

history

The place was first mentioned in 879 by Gherardo I, Bishop of Lucca . In the 12th century, the place was fought over by Pisa and Lucca, who divided the place into the Vicariate of Coreglia Antelminelli (Vicaria di Coreglia) in the 13th century . In the 14th century there were conflicts between Lucca and Florence and Borgo a Mozzano came under the control of the Fiorentines for a few years from 1342. Then the place came back to the Vicaria di Coreglia and from 1562 in its own Vicaria di Borgo a Mozzano. Pescaglia belonged to the municipality until 1837, but then became independent. In the Second World War , the place was at the Gothic position .

  • Ponte della Maddalena , also called Ponte del Diavolo (Devil's Bridge), medieval bridge over the Serchio and symbol of the municipality. According to tradition, Mathilde von Tuszien is said to have initiated the construction. The left arch (seen upstream from Borgo a Mozzano) was added when the Lucca-Aulla railway was built.
  • Ponte delle Catene (chain bridge), bridge over the Lima between Borgo a Mozzano and Fornoli (district of Bagni di Lucca). Created by Lorenzo Nottolini and completed in 1860.
  • Chiesa di San Jacopo , church in the center from the 11th / 12th centuries. Century, which was expanded in the 16th century. Today's campanile was probably part of a fortification earlier.
