Johannes Leonardi
Johannes Leonardi (* around 1541 in Diecimo (today part of Borgo a Mozzano ) near Lucca , Italy ; † October 9, 1609 in Rome , Italy) was an Italian priest and founder of the order . He is considered a saint in the Catholic Church .
Life
Leonardi, who previously worked as a pharmacist, was ordained a priest in 1571 . In Lucca, he took special care of the poor, the sick, prisoners and young people. In 1574 he founded the religious order of the regular clerics of the Mother of God , which was mainly dedicated to the religious education of the local people. To support religious education, he founded the lay community Society of Christian Teaching . Due to the rejection of his work in Lucca, he moved to Rome. There Leonardi became a co-founder of the Urbania Mission Quorum . He was also committed to building hospitals and schools. On behalf of Pope Clement VIII , he reformed several orders and congregations. In the last years of his life, Leonardi was a popular preacher. He is (alongside the martyrs Cosmas and Damian ) the patron saint of pharmacists .
In 1861 he was beatified and in 1938 by Pope Pius XI. canonized .
