Panorama of Montecarlo
Montecarlo is an Italian municipality with 4372 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Lucca in Tuscany .
The old town of Montecarlo lies on a secluded hill in the plain of Lucca. The municipalities include Fornace, Gossi, Luciani, Micheloni, San Giuseppe, San Piero in Campo, San Salvatore and Turchetto.
The neighboring municipalities are Altopascio , Capannori , Chiesina Uzzanese (PT), Pescia (PT) and Porcari .
Montecarlo was founded in 1333 by the later Emperor Charles IV and named after him. It was founded to replace the place that had been destroyed by the Florentines. Montecarlo remained in the hands of the Lucchesians until it was conquered by Florence in 1437 , to which it belonged until the unification of Italy.
The fortress completed in 1555 by Cosimo I de 'Medici , the church of S. Andrea from 1700 and the chapel of St. Anna are worth seeing . Montecarlo also has the Teatro dei Rassicurati from the early 18th century.
Montecarlo has been a DOC wine-growing region since 1969 . This was updated on March 7, 2014. There are red and white wines produced, and a Vin Santo .
Even the olive cultivation for oil extraction plays a role.
Montecarlo maintains community partnerships with Karlštejn in the Czech Republic , with Althen-des-Paluds in France and, since October 8, 2006, with Mylau in Saxony.
A special feature of the partnerships is that all four cities are connected with each other and have mutually concluded corresponding contracts.
