Pomino

The name Pomino DOC refers to Italian red , white , rosé and sparkling wines as well as red and white Vin Santo from Pomino (a district of Rufina ) in the metropolitan city of Florence , Tuscany . The wines have had a "controlled designation of origin " ( Denominazione di origine controllata - DOC) since 1983 , which was last updated on March 7, 2014.

Cultivation

Cultivation and vinification of these wines are only permitted in the municipality of Pomino (sub-municipality of Rufina) in the Tuscany region.

The denomination prescribes the following grape varieties for the various types of wine :

  • Pomino Vin Santo : At least 70% Pinot bianco , Pinot Grigio , Chardonnay and Trebbiano - individually or together. A maximum of 30% other white grape varieties approved for cultivation in the Tuscany region may be added.
  • Pomino Rosso , Pomino Rosso “Riserva” , Pomino Rosso vendemmia tardiva (Eng. “Late Harvest”) and Pomino Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice (Eng. “Eye of the Guinea Fowl”): At least 50% Sangiovese. A maximum of 50% Pinot nero and Merlot may be added - individually or together. and a maximum of 25% other red grape varieties that are approved for cultivation in the Tuscany region may be added.
  • Pomino Spumante bianco and Pomino Spumante rosato (also with the attribute "Riserva"): At least 70% Chardonnay , Pinot bianco and Pinot nero - individually or together. A maximum of 30% other white grape varieties approved for cultivation in the Tuscany region may be added.
  • The grape variety mentioned must contain at least 85% of the following wines. A maximum of 15% other analogue grape varieties that are approved for cultivation in the Tuscany region may be added:
    • Pomino Chardonnay
    • Pomino Sauvignon
    • Pomino Pinot nero
    • Pomino Merlot

The Pomino Rosso can carry the predicate "Riserva" if it has matured for at least two years, of which at least 12 months in oak and three months in the bottle. Pomino Bianco must have matured for at least one year (of which at least eight months in oak barrels) before it can be given the title "Riserva". Pomino Spumante must be left on the lees for at least 36 months in order to be able to bear the label "Riserva".
