San Gimignano DOC

Wines with a "controlled designation of origin " ( Denominazione di origine controllata - DOC) are produced under the name San Gimignano in the town of the same name in the province of Siena . The denomination was first issued on August 8, 1996 and last updated on March 7, 2014. These are red and rosé wines as well as Vin Santo .

Cultivation

The cultivation and production of the wines may only take place in the municipality of San Gimignano in the province of Siena.

generation

The following types of wine can be produced:

  • San Gimignano rosso and San Gimignano rosato : must contain at least 50% Sangiovese grapes ; A maximum of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon , Merlot , Syrah , Pinot nero may be added - individually or together. In addition, a maximum of 15% other red grape varieties that are approved for cultivation in the Tuscany region may be added.
  • San Gimignano Vinsanto or Vin Santo : 30–100% Trebbiano Toskano and 0–50% Malvasia del Chianti and 0–20% Vernaccia may be used. Furthermore, a maximum of 10% of other white grape varieties that are approved for cultivation in the Tuscany region may be added.
  • San Gimignano Vinsanto Occhio di Pernice or Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice : 50–100% Sangiovese. Furthermore, a maximum of 50% other grape varieties that are approved for cultivation in the Tuscany region may be added.
  • Almost single-variety wines (here the grape varieties mentioned must be at least 85%):
    • San Gimignano Sangiovese
    • San Gimignano Cabernet Sauvignon
    • San Gimignano Merlot
    • San Gimignano Syrah
    • San Gimignano Pinot nero
